Erection Problems (Erectile Dysfunction) - Other Treatment

Posted on March 11th, 2008 by zylstra.

erectile dysfunction

erection problems (erectile erectile dysfunction impotence treatment) include
vacuum devices, external penile splints, and counseling (psychotherapy).

Other Treatment Choices

  • Vacuum devices are useful for all types
of erection new erectile dysfunction medication, psychological, or both. The device has a tube
you place around the penis. You pump the device to create a vacuum that leads
to an erection. Then you place a band around the base of the penis to maintain
the erection for up to 30 minutes.
  • Counseling (psychotherapy) is recommended for men whose erection
problems are caused, at least in part, by psychological factors. It may include
    sex
therapy, which focuses on methods to improve attitudes toward sex and
specific sexual health care treatment. Counseling also may be used with medication
treatment or vacuum devices for erection problems that have psychological and
    physical causes.
  • External penile splints may be another alternative treatment for erectile dysfunction
option. External penile splints are mechanical supports that “hold up” the
penis. Although penile splints have been available for years, they have not
often been used because they covered much of the penis or resulted in painful
intercourse. Their advantages are that they are noninvasive, inexpensive, and
often reusable. More recent penile splints do away with many of the old
problems. However, they must be sized to each man and are best used by those
who are capable of partial erection.

What To Think About

Some men take the amino acid L-arginine as a dietary supplement
to try to treat erection problems. The amino acid increases the amount of
nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels; theoretically, L-arginine could
improve erections. However, L-arginine may be harmful.7

No matter what approach you use to treat an erection problem,
including your partner in the decision is helpful and may improve
results.

Erectile Dysfunction: Future Treatments for ED

Posted on March 10th, 2008 by zylstra.
Categories: Erectile dysfunction treatment.

erectile dysfunction

Future treatments for erectile dysfunction focus on providing
medications that are more effective, work rapidly, and have fewer, if any, side
effects than currently available treatments. Currently there are three
oral medications available to treat ED - Cialis, Levitra and Viagra. A
number of pharmaceutical companies are researching new treatments for ED, and
many new options may be just around the corner. These include:

Uprima: Uprima (apomorphine) comes in a tablet form that
dissolves under the tongue. Uprima works by stimulating the brain chemical
dopamine, which heightens sexual interest and sensations. A small number of
people passed out after taking Uprima, so its release in the U.S. is on hold;
however, it is currently available in Europe. Clinical trials are also
currently being conducted on a nasal spray form of this drug.

Topiglan: Still under dysfunction erectile natural treatment, a cream applied to the
penis called topiglan uses the same drug (condition dysfunction erectile more treatment) that is used in
injection therapy and suppository therapy. If topiglan proves to be safe
and effective, it is still not entirely clear which patients would benefit from
its application and whether patients on injection and suppository therapy would
no longer have to use these techniques.

Avanafil: This newer phosphodiesterase inhibitor is
currently showing promise in clinical trials for the treatment of erectile
dysfunction. Unlike the current oral medications for the treatment of ED, this
one may be able to be taken twice daily for people who want to have intercourse
more than once a day. Further studies are underway.

Melanocortin activators: These are drugs that appear to act
through the central nervous system (for example, the brain). They have been
shown in animal studies to produce an erection. Initial studies in humans
suggest that the drug (PT-141)can be effective if administered intranasally
(through the nose) in men with mental rather than physical causes of ED and
mild to moderate ED. Larger studies will be necessary to dysfunction help
the safety
and overall erectile dysfunction in young man
of these drugs.

Gene therapy: This novel therapy would deliver genes that
produce products or proteins that may not be functioning properly in the penile
tissue of men with ED. Replacement of these proteins may result in improvement
in erectile function. Experimental animal models have demonstrated improvement
in erectile function with gene therapy. Human studies may also demonstrate
success with this therapy. Gene therapy may take a long time for regulatory
approval and public acceptance.

Prostate Cancer Treatment and Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

erectile dysfunction

Prostate cancer itself doesn’t usually cause ED; but, treatments for the
disease can. Current methods of treating prostate cancer, including surgery
with radical prostatectomy (removal of the entire prostate gland), radiation
therapy, whether by external beam or brachytherapy (radioactive seed implant),
and hormone therapy, can all cause some form of erectile dysfunction.

The likelihood of developing ED following prostate cancer treatment depends
on several factors, including: the type of surgery (nerve sparing or non-nerve
sparing), your age, the extent of the cancer, the quality of erections prior to
surgery and whether you received additional therapies, such as hormone therapy
prior to the surgery or radiation therapy, either prior to or after the
surgery.

If you do develop erectile dysfunction following treatment for prostate
cancer you have several treatment options to consider.

Treatment Options

Drug Therapy

There are currently three oral drugs — Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis — that
are available to treat ED in people who have undergone treatment for prostate
cancer. While success rates vary, people who are more likely to benefit from
medicine treatment are those who have had bilateral nerve sparing radical
prostatectomy or radiation therapy. In addition, younger men undergoing
treatment for ED tend to reap more benefits from the medicine. Also, men with
fewer ED risk factors, such as cigarette smoking, hypertension, high
cholesterol, and coronary artery disease, also gain the most benefit.

Penile Injections

This is the most common treatment for ED in people who have had treatment
for prostate cancer and did not respond to oral therapy. Penile injection works in about 80% of
people who use it, but despite the success rate, long-term use of the treatment
is low. The treatment involves injecting medicine into the penis prior to sex;
but, if the technique is performed properly, pain is not usually a significant
problem.

Vacuum Constriction Devices

Vacuum erectile dysfunction impotence treatment devices have
been helpful to some men in facilitating condition dysfunction erectile more treatment after treatment for
prostate cancer. Many men, however, find the devise uncomfortable or somewhat
cumbersome.

Penile Prostheses

Penile prosthesis is another
treatment option for men experiencing ED as a result of prostate cancer
treatment. However, doctors generally recommend patients wait one to two years
before considering an implant to see if their condition improves or responds to
one of the more erectile dysfunction symptom
treatment options.

Erection Problems (Erectile Dysfunction) - Treatment Overview

Posted on March 8th, 2008 by zylstra.
Categories: Erectile dysfunction treatment.

erectile dysfunction

erection problem (erectile dysfunction) depends on the
cause of the problem, which may be psychological, physical, or a combination of
both. Erection problems that have one or more major physical causes also often
have psychological factors that make the problem worse and make treatment more
complicated.

Many doctors take a stepwise approach to treating erection
problems, using the least invasive treatments first. These steps are:

  1. Discovering and then eliminating
medications that may be causing your condition. In
some cases a different medication can be tried.
  2. Trying an oral
    medication (such as
    phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors Viagra, Levitra or
Cialis), unless an easily treated cause-such as a medication side
    effect or
    testosterone deficiency-has been
    identified.
  3. Trying medications that are injected or inserted into
    the penis.
  4. Trying a vacuum device.
  5. Trying penile
implant surgery or an external penile splint.
  6. Getting
counseling if a psychological cause is suspected.

Counseling (also called psychotherapy) or behavioral therapy may be
impotence natural herbs
even if your erection problem has a physical cause. It may be
offered if your health professional suspects psychological issues play a role
in your erection problems.

For more information on treatment options, see:

Should I use phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors
(such as Viagra, Levitra or Cialis) for erection
problems?

Should I use injections for erection
problems?

What To Think About

It is important to involve your partner in your decision
regardless of the treatment you choose.

Oral medications have revolutionized the treatment of erection
problems, and they are commonly tried first before other medication or
surgery.

Although phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors have relatively few side
effects, they can be dangerous in certain men. If you are taking
drug for treatment of erectile dysfunction medications, such as nitroglycerin,
you cannot use Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis. You also should not take certain
article exercise health
to lower blood pressure and to treat an enlarged
prostate gland-with these medications because of the
risk of a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Check with your health professional
to see whether you can take Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis with your
alpha-blocker.

Many men overestimate how important being able to have erections
is to their relationships. Some men find that once they are able to have
erections again, the hassle of using the treatment is not worth the effort.
Other men may find that being able to have erections doesn’t change their
relationship as much as they or their partners had expected.

Erectile Dysfunction: Alternative Treatments

A health treatment that is not classified as standard Western
medical practice is referred to as “alternative” or
“complementary.” Alternative treatments include nutritional
dysfunction erectile symptom
, herbal remedies, and acupuncture.

Some men may choose to use alternative treatments in addition to cause and treatment of erectile dysfunction
treatments for ED. If you are considering an alternative form of treatment for
ED, seek the advice of a healthcare provider before getting started.

Alternative Treatments for ED

Nutritional Supplements: nutritional supplements including
the amino acid arginine, bioflavonoids, zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and
flaxseed meal have been used to improve erectile function. In addition, certain
ED patients with low levels of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) showed
improvement in erectile function after receiving supplemental doses of DHEA.
However, because the long-term safety of DHEA is not known, most experts do not
recommend its use.

Herbal Remedies: Asian ginseng and Ginkgo biloba are
believed to improve erectile function in some men. However, consult a doctor
before taking any herbal supplements to ensure they are safe for you to
take.

Herbal remedy for erectile dysfunction: an ancient Chinese method of healing that involves
sticking very fine, solid needles into specific points on the body, acupuncture
stimulates the body’s ability to resist or overcome illnesses and conditions by
correcting imbalances. Acupuncture has helped some men with ED.

If you are having erectile problems, consult a physician to determine the
cause and learn about all your treatment options.

Common Sense Measures

Keep in mind that because most alternative and complementary treatments are
not regulated, it is difficult to know what you are getting. Here are some tips
to follow when considering using herbal remedies.

  • Talk to your doctor about any herbal products you are considering before
    trying them.
  • If you experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat,
anxiety, insomnia, diarrhea, or skin rashes, stop taking the herbal product and
    notify your doctor.
  • Avoid preparations made with more than one herb.
  • Beware of commercial claims of what herbal products can do. Look for
    dysfunction erectile help
    sources of information.
  • Select brands carefully. Only purchase brands that list the herb’s common
and scientific name, the name and address of the manufacturer, a batch and lot
number, expiration date, dosage guidelines, and potential side effects.
  • Above all, if taking erectile dysfunction vitamins
supplements, be sure your doctor is
informed before combining with prescription drugs he may recommend.

Man pleads guilty to selling seal parts to treat erectile dysfunction

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A man who once agreed to help conserve fur seals has pleaded guilty to illegally selling their parts.

Michael Richard Zacharof, former president of the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government, co-signed an agreement with the National Marine Fisheries Service in 2000 to help manage northern fur seals. Northern fur seals are designated a “depleted species” under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Zacharof, 50, of St. Paul Island, entered his plea by telephone in a hearing held Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Anchorage. St. Paul Island is located about 300 miles west of the Alaska mainland in the Bering Sea. Its 460 residents are mostly Eskimo or Aleut.

Zacharof faces up to one year in prison and a $20,000 fine for selling seal parts when he is sentenced in the fall.

A call to his home on St. Paul Island was not impotence advice returned.

Federal impotency male pill say Zacharof illegally sold more than 100 seal penises to a Korean gift shop in Anchorage, where they were to be resold for about $100 apiece in the traditional Chinese medicine trade.

Seal penis bones, also called oosiks, are sometimes believed to work like erectile dysfunction drugs, Assistant U.S. Attorney Aunnie Steward said.

The investigation began in Massachusetts in 2004 when bear gall bladders and seal oosiks were discovered in a Boston suburb. The sales were traced to the Korean gift shop in Anchorage. From there, the parts were traced to Zacharof, an Alaska Native who headed a seal hunt, Steward said.

“They (Alaska Natives) are allowed to do this for acupuncture impotence
purposes and they also are allowed to convert different parts of the seal to traditional Native handicrafts,” she said. “They can't sell raw unworked marine mammal parts of any kind.”

Steward said the gift shop also faces prosecution.

Kevin Heck, assistant special agent in charge of fisheries erectile dysfunction herbal remedy
for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Anchorage, said the agency was surprised to discover the scope of the market in seal oosiks.

Such cases are difficult to prosecute for a number of reasons, including the remoteness of St. Paul Island, Heck said.

St. Paul, which is part of the Pribilof Islands, was discovered by Russian fur traders in the 1780s. Fur seals subsequently were severely overharvested.

Botox injections ease symptoms of prostate enlargement

erectile dysfunction

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Injections of botulinum toxin A, or Botox, into the prostate gland eased the symptoms of enlarged prostate in men for up to a year, according to the results of a small study published Wednesday.

Erectile symptom
at the Chang Gung University Medical College, Taiwan, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pennsylvania, based their study on 37 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP), or enlarged prostate.

All patients received a single injection of Botox into their prostate, the researchers said in their paper published in a summary ahead of this week's American Urological Association's annual conference, in Annaheim, Herbal remedy for erectile dysfunction.

A year into the treatment 27 patients - 73 percent of the group - experienced a 30 percent improvement in urinary tract symptoms and quality of life, said Dr Yao-Chi Chuang, chief investigator for the Taiwanese university.

Chuang said Botox - a popular, surgery-free cosmetic treatment for wrinkles - reduces the size of the prostate gland through a cellular process called apoptosis, in which the prostate cells die in a programmed manner.

The treatment posed no significant side effects, such as stress urinary dysfunction erectile natural treatment or erectile dysfunction, said Pittsburgh's Michael Chancellor, senior author of the study.

The reduction in size of the prostate can improve urine flow and decrease residual urine left in the bladder, he said.

“Our results are erectile dysfunction
because they indicate that Botox could represent a simple, safe and effective treatment for enlarged prostate that has long-term benefits,” Chancellor added.

BHP is one of the most common diseases affecting men as they age. More than half of all men over the age of 60 and by age 80 develop enlarged prostates, the researchers said.

Forty to 50 percent will develop symptoms of BHP, including more frequent urination, urinary tract infections, the inability to completely empty the bladder and, in severe cases, eventual damage to the bladder and kidneys, they added.

Botox is a powerful neurotoxin introduced nearly two decades ago. It is used to cure some facial problems but is best known for its cosmetic qualities in paralysing facial muscles and thus giving foreheads a erectile dysfunction symptom
appearance.

Waist size tied to urinary symptoms in older men

erectile dysfunction

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - An expanding waistline in older men is drug for treatment of erectile dysfunction with worsening lower urinary tract symptoms and poorer sexual function, according to research reported at the American Urological Association meeting in Anaheim.

At a press briefing, Dr. Steven A. Kaplan from Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, noted that waist size is one component of the so-called metabolic syndrome, which signifies an elevated risk of heart disease and diabetes. “It is becoming very clear that when you have multiple erectile dysfunction
of the metabolic syndrome you can bet that you will have components of pelvic dysfunction, which we would define as sexual dysfunction and voiding dysfunction,” Kaplan said.

He and his erectile dysfunction impotence medication tested the idea that waist circumference may be a useful predictor of prostate volume and the severity of pelvic dysfunction.

They grouped 88 men (average age, 62 years) with moderate or severe untreated voiding symptoms by waist circumference: 30-36 inches, 36-40 inches, and more than 40 inches.

Young man impotence waist circumference was significantly associated with “every parameter we looked at,” Kaplan said. Prostate volume, PSA level, voiding symptom score, erectile dysfunction, and health treatment
dysfunction all increased as waist size increased, he explained.

“The results were simply remarkable. They even surprised us,” he commented. “We have no doubt, at least from this cohort of patients, that increasing waist circumference is associated with worsening male health — voiding and sexual function.”

This study, Kaplan concluded, shows that obese men are at increased risk of pelvic dysfunction and can be “easily diagnosed” by measuring waist circumference.
